Why do parents get upset when their small children/toddlers say dirty words?

We do not use dirty words in my house. We don't have any family members except 1 who cusses on a regular basis. Most of our family/friends watch what they say around our children.

However, I have a friend who cusses on a regular basis and her son says dirty words and gross things all the time. Then she gets mat at him and punishes him. I want to shout at her "he's just copying you, stop saying those words and he will too", but I keep my mouth shut.

Why do parents get upset when 9 times out of 10 it's the parents that the child is copying. (EDIT: Yes, I know kids can pick that stuff up from daycare and school as well).

Your thoughts?

I think the parents are just clueless &/or selfish. It's like when parents let their young kids watch inappropriate tv or movies and then punish them for imitating what they see. Clueless if they don't know that's going to happen or selfish if they know it'll happen but don't alter what their kids are exposed to, be it their own language, tv, movies or whatever.
