The Benefits of a Punching Bag Workout

Getting your exercise by way of a punching bag workout is good for a number of reasons. It builds up strength, helps to tone your muscles and is good cardio vascular exercise. Add to that, you can take out the cares of the day on the bag, by pretending that it is the person who really annoyed you that day. Imagine you are punching them and the session will fly past, and all the stress you had let builds up will be gone. This form of exercise really became popular in the 1970s and is still popular today.

As with all workouts, you should do some gentle exercise first. Although there is not a great deal of speed involved, it is still easy to damage a muscle. You should do enough to work up a light sweat, and make sure you exercise all your limbs as the legs still need to be stretched even if it is your arms and shoulders that will be doing most of the moving.

Your hands must be protected at all times. Bare-knuckle fighters may have flinched at the idea of wearing gloves, but it is not for the average participant. In particular, make sure that your knuckles are protected. As with the warm up you have just done, start slowly. Make the first few punches fairly light ones and then build up to harder more powerful blows.

Try kicking the bag from time to time. Unless you are really supple you may not be able to reach high up the bag, but the more you practice the higher you will be able to hit. Keep bouncing up and down on the balls of your feet. This will allow you to be better placed to hit the bag as it moves, and keeps your heart rate up. This is why it is so important to warm up before hand.

As you learn how the bag moves, it will help you with your leg movements. It is no good taking a small bounce backward and aiming a punch if the bag has swung away from you. Try to change the routine you follow each time. Punch then kick at the end, and next time spends a few minutes on each before starting the routine again. If you just do the same thing, time and again it will be easy to become bored and that could deter you from carrying on.

As with any workout, music will always help, It would be quite easy to find something with a suitable beat, If nothing else use the soundtracks from Rocky. Always remember to warm down at the end, as it is as easy to cause a problem by missing this, as you would be by missing out the warm up. Once you get into the routine of getting your exercise by way of a punching bag workout, you will not want to go back to any other way of keeping fit.
