Pulse Oximeter Regularly Used by the Elderly

The ailments that the elderly of our nation experience are quite varied. In particular, many suffer from various respiratory and cardiac ailments. That is where the branch of medicine known as Geriatrics comes into play. Geriatrics takes particular attention to the concept that the body of an elderly person is very different from that of an adult. Cardiogeriatrics is the branch of cardiology and geriatric medicine that specifically deals with the cardiovascular disorders of the elderly.

The elderly experience such cardiac disorders as coronary heart disease, heart failure, cardiomyopathy, and arrhythmias. These cardiac ailments compromise some of the major causes of mortality among the elderly. A tool which has been used by nursing homes as well as elderly patients in the home to monitor their pulse rate and blood oxygen saturation is a pulse oximeter.

A pulse oximeter is a small, hand-held medical device that measures the oxygen saturation of a patient's blood as well a patient's heart rate. As opposed to measuring oxygen saturation through an invasive procedure such as a blood sample, a pulse oximeter is used as a painless and non-invasive medical instrument. Because of their ease of use, speed, and cost effectiveness, pulse oximeters are the preferred medical device in all healthcare settings as well as for home diagnostics.

The FDA approved Landon Medical PC-60B2 Finger Pulse Oximeter measures SpO2 (percentage of oxygen saturation in the blood) and pulse rate with accuracy and ease. Specifically manufactured to be lightweight and portable the PC-60B2 model provides fast and accurate readings of blood oxygen saturation, pulse rate, Perfusion Index, and audio/visual alarm functions. Small and compact it provides complete oximetry solutions while still able to fit in the pocket of the elderly patients.

The PC-60B2 is a widely used medical device all health-care facilities, including hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient surgery centers, physician offices, dentist offices, emergency and ambulatory situations, sport athletes, as well for home diagnostics for monitoring such illnesses as COPD, cardiac problems, respiratory issues, asthma, and many more. The PC-60B2 model features an Organic Light Emitting Device (OLED) display and Plethsmograph capabilities. The color display is manufactured especially to allow for the elderly to easily read their results from the oximeter.
