Thera Band Theraband
Van de Graff generator question.?

hi.
i want to try and build a van de graff generator for my risistant materials prodject. can someone give me advice on these things or other things that may go wrong.

1) i want to use a "TheraBand" as the band that carries the electrons. will this work, their website is -

http://www.thera-band.com/

i thinks it is like latex or something.

2) the botom roller will probably be made of plastic. so should the top one be made of glass. iv'e heared that the rollers must be from different ends of the triboelectric series, but my teacher says no?

3) should the top brush be touching the band, but not the bottom one. or both touching or neither toutching.

and last. can the sphere ontop be sitting on top of the tube or does the tube have to go inside the tube.

thanks for helping. i live in the UK if that is any help to you and can you give me any other tips. thanks.

When I taught physics, I built a van de graff generator almost entirely out things I purchased at Bed Bath and Beyond, plus a little bit of lego and 1 wire from radioshack.

I used something similar to that for the band. Mine was made of rubber. Don't worry about the material of the bottom roller. Unless you have a method to spray charge onto the belt, your belt will be better used to help generate the charge rather than just carry it.

In my design, the bottom roller was used to drive the belt. I affixed a lego wheel to a drill to drive the belt with two CDs on either side of the wheel to keep the belt in place. There are many alternative ways to acheive this same function. The charge was created at the top when my rubber belt ran over a fixed plastic rod (rolling pin covered in tape in my case). The same effect can be acheived with silk and glass, but rubber belts are easier to drive and hold tight because they stretch.

I had a ground wire hooked up at the bottom of the belt, touching it, to provide an endless stream of new charge. At the top, I had the brush affixed to the plastic touching the spot where the belt was moving as best as possible. It doesn't need to be touching, as some charge will move along the plastic, but it'll work better the closer to touching you get it. It could also be done by touching the rubber instead of the plastic.

The sphere just needs to be insulated from the ground. It doesn't matter beyond that exactly where it's located. Have the insullated wire run inside it for the best result.

Good luck, and be careful with the ground wire. I hooked mine up to an eletrical outlet ground, but I took a number of precautions to make sure I wasn't going to be in any danger of electrocution. If you do the same, make sure it's under supervision of your teacher to stay safe.

edit: cunny, yeah, mine was pretty tempermental too. I based it off designs I saw online for little miniature ones you can make with a soda can. I never got those to work though. Mine cost me about $100 without the price of the drill. I overspent on some parts because I intended to use them later (like the rolling pin) after taking apart the machine. It could be done cheaper. Buying one pre-made is more expensive than building your own. I have to say, I got some strange looks taking it to school on the NYC subway.

I also built a speaker. I found that actually a lot harder than the van de graff generator, but it impressed the students a lot less.

What exercises can you do with Thera Band (theraband) "THERA BAND"
