Containing Chemical Spills

As better methods for moving, transferring, and handling hazardous chemicals are identified and implemented in manufacturing and chemical industries, there will be less risk of accidentally spilling hazardous chemicals. But until that risk is substantially reduced, accidents are still likely.

To lessen the risk of causing chemical spills, take your time when handling or moving chemicals; keep focused on the task at hand, and immediately respond to chemical spills that may occur.

Check the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)/Globally Harmonized System Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for instructions and cautions about using particular absorbing materials, and disposal containers and liners. Learn where the emergency response kit is stored, and how to use it. It is important to learn the value of its use as well as its limitations.

Develop a Spill Response Plan that identifies specific activities and use of materials and equipment, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) needed to respond and contain a spill of chemicals used in a specific area of the facility. Include contact information for supervisors, designated spill response team members, and other emergency response team members, including Public Safety. Learn to don PPE, including respirators.

Alert area occupants and your supervisor that a spill has occurred.  If flammable liquids are involved in the spill, control all sources of ignition, contact plant security if electrical equipment must be shutdown to prevent an ignition source, and evacuate if necessary.

Assist those splashed or wettened by chemicals in the spill. Although the MSDS may be used to identify first aid measures to use in a particular chemical spill, it does not attempt to scale the type of first aid response to the size or nature of the spill; other chemicals may be involved and working conditions may also impact your response. Follow first aid measures specifically written in the Spill Response Plan for responding to specific chemicals you use in your work area.

Place spill socks (fabric tubes containing spill absorbing materials) around floor drains to prevent uncontrolled release of spilled substances from entering sanitary or storm drains resulting environmental impact. Follow the Spill Response Plan for containing, neutralizing, and absorbing hazardous chemicals.

Place chemical soaked absorbent materials into a polyethylene-lined container; write the name of the chemical(s) in the container, and identify the entire contents as spill debris.
