Holistic Practitioners—How Are They Different From Regular Health Professionals?

For most people today, when they have to seek treatment for something, there are two options. Either they could visit their general physician and resort to some conventional form of allopathic medicine or they could go to some holistic practitioner and avail of some nonconventional form of treatment. However, though the latter forms of treatment are still called as nonconventional treatments, they are already defying even the definition of the term ‘nonconventional'. Due to the huge amount of popularity that they have garnered in present times, all these methods are soon becoming mainstream.

But what people want to know is how these holistic medicine specialists are different from the usual doctors. Here we take a closer look at them.

1. The primary difference is in the technique itself. While the usual doctors use medicines and therapies that have been developed through medicinal science, holistic approaches are different. Basically, while conventional medicine looks only at the body of the person, most holistic practitioners will look more at the spiritual and mental wellbeing of the person. Hence, their methods don't just pertain to physical treatment, but they also adopt methods for mental development. An example is in Yoga, a therapy that's not just about treating the body, but about stimulating the mind as well.

2. There is a very definite effort with all holistic approaches to tap the various potentials of nature. While the regular medicinal forms use a lot of substances that are synthetic, holistic methods use products that are obtained from the vast flora and fauna of the world. An Ayurveda practitioner will deal with herbal medicine, obtained in a completely natural manner.

3. Holistic practitioners also try to release the latent energies trapped within our bodies so that the bodies begin to perform better. There is a strong belief in most forms of holistic medicine that our bodies are capable of doing much more than what it actually does, and for that it is necessary for us to unleash these energies. Methods such as Reiki, Yoga, acupuncture and others directly use this concept for treatment of people. In fact, it is right to say that holistic methods don't just look at the treatment of an individual; they look at improving the person's complete lifestyle.

All this discussion brings us to what we started with—is alternative medicine becoming so big that it will one day displace conventional medicinal forms? While that cannot be answered concretely right now, there are all indications that this will happen. For one, all holistic methods have been around for millennia (most conventional medicinal forms are just a few score years old) and that means they have a higher credibility aspect, though they may not have obtained scientific ratification yet. People are also seeing the fact that alternative forms of medicine are more harmonious with nature, while allopathic forms take us away from nature.

Considering all these points, the wave is definitely in favor of holistic medicines. Today they might be considered as secondary modes of medicine, or even just a supplementary assistance for treatment, but trends show that they are going to replace the usual forms of medicine that we commonly know about.
